2013 Health Goals

April 4th, 2013

My wife and I agreed with my doctors (as though they know something) that I need to take greater responsibility for my health.  This involves a change in my sedentary & repetitive lifestyle.  I sit at a desk for ~8 hours, 5 or 6 days out of 7; a sizable portion with a headset on, in meetings.  When I leave work I tend to feel drained (who got into technology so that they could go to meetings for hours on end?) and I find it challenging to focus.  My awesome wife also has some of similar desires to work on her fitness although she’s way more in shape than am I.

To this end we invested in an elliptical.  It’s not like both our companies lack gyms and there’s a college about 5 miles down the street that has community memberships to its recently renovated exercise area.  Even our local city provides a greenspace track that runs for several miles.  I’m just not that trusting.  I think gyms tend to be meat markets when they’re in a corporate setting; the boundaries blur and it becomes too easy to start sharing or whatever.  For all the experiences people have to the contrary it only takes one time and it’s worth the money to me to exercise at home.  Here the kids can play, study or do whatever they choose while Mom or Dad can put in 10, 20, 30 minutes or a couple of hours if we wish, all the time reading on the Tab or watching a video from PluralSight.

My measurebator tendencies come with a perk: I often like collecting and counting datapoints. I have an Endomondo account and I’m thinking of getting a fitbit.  If anyone has experience with this device I’d love to hear about it.

My goal, in terms of this device, is to work up to four days of at least 30 minutes of walking by June 1st and losing 40 pounds (~`18 kilos) by Dec 31.  The weight loss will require changes to other aspects of my life but if having a target is a pretty good way to tell if you’re getting closer or farther from what you want.
